McCreary County Museum

stearns logoLocated in the heart of Historic Stearns, the McCreary County Museum is housed in the old Stearns Coal and Lumber Company Corporate headquarters, built in 1907. The Museum was founded in 1988 and we invite everyone to visit and explore our unique history.


The Museum is filled with historic documents, objects, and photographs pertaining to Historic Stearns and McCreary County, including exhibits that demonstrate the culture and lifestyle of McCreary Countians over the years. Our Museum overlooks the town of Stearns which features the Big South Fork Scenic Railway and local craft and gift shops.



April: Thursday thru Saturday, 9 am to 4 pm

May thru October: Wednesday thru Saturday, 9 am to 4 pm, and Sunday 11 am to 4 pm

November: Thursday thru Saturday, 11 am to 4 pm – Closed Thanksgiving Day.

Annual Christmas Open House: 2nd Saturday of December 12 pm to 4 pm

December thru March: By appointment only.

Admission Prices:

Adults: $5.00
Seniors: $4.00
Children (ages 5-12): $3.00
Children under 5: FREE
Museum Members: FREE
McCreary County Residents: Half Price Tuesday thru Saturday


We are located 1 ½ hours from Knoxville, Tennessee and 2 ½ hours from Lexington, Kentucky. We are approximately 45 minutes from the Cumberland Falls State Park and Rugby Tennessee and 30 min from Burnside Island State Park. Feel free to call for directions or more information at 606-376-5730.
